Federation Square, Melbourne

Australia
Federation Square is a social and cultural hub in the heart of Melbourne, an inner-city precinct with unique design features spread on an area of 38,000 m2. Recognized as one of the biggest architectural complexes in the world, Federation Square was built in 2001 to commemorate the centenary of the Federation and provide the city with a new cultural and entertainment centre in the heart of downtown. Fitted with a flooring by sandstone coming from the region of Kimberley (Western Australia), the square, which can accommodate up to 15,000 people, rises with a slight slope above the street level, offering a panoramic view of the City and Yarra river.

Rapidly become an unmissable attraction for tourists and a feverish meeting point for locals, Federation Square converges upon two major public spaces: two open squares (St. Paul's Court and The Square) and one covered (The Atrium), built on top of a concrete deck above busy railway lines. The Atrium is one of the major public areas in the district. It is a five stores high, laneway-like space with glazed walls and roof supported by an exposed metal structure. The Atrium is a multi-function indoor venue specific for exhibitions, product displays, launches, artistic installations, showcases and markets. Measuring approximately 90m x 17m with a 15m suspended ceiling and a cantilevered opening, The Atrium is home to some of Melbourne’s major galleries, cafés and specialty stores. The central floor space is complemented by the Fracture Gallery and the Air Gallery, with the steel frame of the building providing excellent points for rigging. The Atrium also allows direct access to the Deakin Edge theatre, with the flexibility to use both venues as part of a large festival, event or exhibition.

True distinctive feature of Federation Square, the eye catching honeycomb structure made up of glass walls of the Atrium has been illuminated from within with a bright color changing scheme elegantly performed, among other fixtures, by an array of POWERSHINE MK2 D in RGBW configuration, specified and installed by GRIVEN’s authorized distributor for Australia, the company ULA. The three-dimensional depth of this imposing space results further enhanced by a lively and dynamic color succession, which creates a true wow-effect at night, making the square an authentic attraction.
POWERSHINE MK2 D uses a total of 192 powerful RGBW LEDs and is available with a vast choice of optics for the maximum lighting design flexibility. Owing to its double cluster configuration, which offers full independent control of each LED bank, this wall washer allows absolute freedom to create matching or divergent effects on formerly prohibitive large-scale facades and remote spots. The combination of RGBW LEDs provides an unprecedented astonishing white light output quality, as well as a wider variety of intermediate color hues for an even broader range of application purposes.
